A brachioplasty, commonly referred to as an arm lift, is a surgical procedure designed to reshape the upper arms by removing excess skin and fat, creating a smoother and more contoured appearance.

It targets the area between the underarm and the elbow, where loose, sagging skin can often be resistant to diet and exercise. Brachioplasty is a form of body contouring surgery that may also involve liposuction to refine the arm shape further.

Why have a brachioplasty?

Many people consider brachioplasty for aesthetic and functional reasons. As we age, or after significant weight loss, the skin can lose elasticity and fail to retract, leading to excess tissue under the arm.

How is a brachioplasty performed?

Brachioplasty is typically performed under general anaesthesia, meaning you will be asleep throughout the procedure. The exact technique depends on your anatomy and goals, but the general steps include:

  • An incision is made along the inner or back side of the upper arm, from the underarm to the elbow.

  • Excess fat may be removed using liposuction.

  • Loose skin is carefully excised, and the remaining skin is tightened.

  • Underlying tissues may be reshaped and sutured to provide a smoother contour.

  • The incisions are closed, and dressings or compression garments are applied to support healing.

Following surgery, it is common to wear a compression garment to help reduce swelling and support the new arm contour. Initial swelling and bruising are expected, and your surgeon will provide specific aftercare instructions, including activity limitations and wound management.

What are the risks of brachioplasty?

All procedures carries risks. You need to weigh up the potential benefits with the risks.

Risks apply to all forms of major surgery and include: infection, bleeding and an adverse reaction to the anaesthetic.

Your Surgeon will discuss these risks, and how you can reduce them before and after surgery, in your consultation.
