Melasma is a common form of skin pigmentation marked by brown – grey patches on the face. Stubborn melasma can be difficult to treat, however our Skin & Laser Clinic in Geelong is seeing great results with breakthrough technology, the PICO Genesis enlighten III Laser.

What is melasma?

Melasma is a common condition that primarily occurs in women.

It’s also called chloasma, or the “mask of pregnancy,” when it occurs in pregnant women.

The condition is marked by brown patches that tend to worsen with sun exposure and increases in the hormone, estrogen.  Genetic predisposition and certain medications can also be a cause.

What does melasma look like?

Melasma is commonly located on the forehead, cheeks, nose and upper lip.  It causes symmetrical (often matching marks on both sides of the face) patches of blotchy, brown to grey-brown discolouration.

Melasma treatment

For some women, melasma disappears on its own. This typically occurs when it’s caused by pregnancy or birth control pills.

However, for others it is an ongoing concern.

Melasma is unfortunately difficult to treat as it is easily aggravated by the sun and light and until now, laser therapy has not really shown to be a satisfactory treatment. Until now.

Australian Skin Face Body is pleased to say we are getting great results from the Cutera PICO Genesis enlighten III laser now available at our Skin & Laser Clinic in Geelong and Ballarat.

PICO Genesis non-invasively uses new technology to help eliminate pigmented lesions such as melasma, dark spots, hyperpigmentation and sunspots while brightening and smoothing out the complexion.

PICO Genesis uses two highly effective laser wavelengths in ultra short pulses to shatter the pigment allowing the body’s natural processes to eliminate the unwanted pigment.

As people with darker skin are generally more likely to have melasma, in a technological breakthrough PICO Genesis can treat all skin types.

Medical grade chemical facial peels can also be used as part of a plan to manage melasma but will not offer the same results as the PICO Genesis Laser.
