Hyperhidrosis
A non-surgical treatment approach for excessive sweating, offered by Mr Ian Holten and our GPs.
About Hyperhidrosis
Sweating is the body's normal way of cooling itself, but for some people, sweating is excessive — well beyond what's needed to regulate temperature. It most commonly affects the palms, soles of the feet, underarms and scalp. The exact cause isn't fully understood, though anxiety, excitement, and certain foods can worsen the condition for some people.
At ASFB, we generally prefer a non-surgical approach to managing hyperhidrosis. Mr Holten and our GPs will discuss the options available to you at consultation, including a prescription-only medical treatment that may be suitable depending on your circumstances. A Medicare rebate may be claimable — your practitioner can advise on this at consultation.
-
Your consultation involves a discussion of your symptoms, which areas are affected, and how sweating is impacting your daily life. Your practitioner will talk through the treatment options available, including whether you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate, before any decision is made.
-
If you proceed with treatment, effects generally aren't permanent, and repeat treatment is typically needed to maintain results over time. Your practitioner will explain what an appropriate schedule looks like for your specific situation.
-
Any treatment for hyperhidrosis discussed at consultation carries risks, which can include, but are not limited to:
Discomfort or bruising at the treatment site
Temporary changes in sensation or muscle function nearby, in less common cases
Infection, in rare cases
The treatment not fully resolving symptoms
Your practitioner will discuss the risks relevant to your specific treatment before proceeding.
-
Aftercare depends on the specific treatment recommended. Your practitioner will provide guidance relevant to your situation following your consultation.
-
As with any medical treatment, individual results vary. Where treatment is effective, it isn't permanent, and repeat sessions are generally needed to sustain the reduction in sweating. Your practitioner will explain how long results typically last, and what ongoing treatment might look like, before you decide whether to proceed.
Costs will be confirmed during your consultation, tailored to your treatment plan.
